2.1.2. Reduction of the piston of the first cylinder in the provision of the top dead point (VMT)

Performance described below procedure is based on the assumption that the ignition distributor (if it is available) is established correctly. If you try to bring the piston into situation VMT in order that it is correct to establish the distributor, position of the piston should be determined by pressure existence in an opening for a spark plug No. 1 then it is necessary to combine labels of ignition or to insert the adaptation for installation of the moment of ignition into a flywheel, depending on model.


The cylinder No. 1 is the cylinder closest to a radiator.

Extreme top position of the piston in its course up and down in the cylinder is called as the top dead point at rotation of a cranked shaft. Each piston reaches VMT as at the end of a compression step, and a release step, but usually to take to consider for engine VMT the top position of the piston at the end of a compression step.

Installation in situation VMT is an integral part of many procedures, such as removal of a distributive belt or a chain and removal of the distributor of ignition.

Before the beginning of procedure make sure that transmission is established in neutral situation and cock the parking brake or block back wheels. Besides, disconnect ignition system, having disconnected a coil wire from the central plug of a cover of the distributor and having earthed it on the block of cylinders by means of a wire.   2. The most preferable way of a provorachivaniye of the crankshaft - by means of a replaceable head and the ratchet mechanism, attached to a bolt twisted in a forward part of the crankshaft.
  3. It is possible to use also the remote switch of a starter that will help to save a little time. Follow the instructions attached to the switch. After the piston as much as possible will come nearer to situation VMT, use a replaceable head and a ratchet as it is described above.
  4. If you have an assistant who can put the ignition lock in the situation "Start" by short breakthroughs, you can approach the piston to situation VMT and without the remote switch of a starter. After your assistant leaves the car, finish procedure by means of a replaceable head and a ratchet as it is described in the point "a".
  5. Notice position of the plug on a distributor cover for a spark plug No. 1 wire. If the plug is not marked, track a wire from a cylinder No. 1 candle to a cover (the cylinder No. 1 - the next to a radiator).
  6. With felt-tip pen or chalk put a label directly under the plug No. 1 on the case of the distributor or on a cover of gear wheels.
  7. Uncover the distributor and put it aside (if necessary see. Head Routine maintenance of the car).
  8. Turn a cranked shaft so that distributive labels (on a forward part of the engine) coincided. On the M40 engine there are no distributive labels in a forward part, instead on it there is a distributive opening in a flywheel which should be combined with an opening in a back flange of the block of cylinders. For this engine, turn a cranked shaft until the begunok of the distributor will not come nearer to situation VMT, and then continue a provorachivaniye while the drill suitable on diameter cannot enter at the same time into openings in the block of cylinders and in a flywheel.
  1. Look at a distributor begunok - it should point directly to a label put with you on the case of the distributor or on a cover of gear wheels.
  1. If the begunok specifies in opposite on 180 ° the direction, means, the piston No. 1 is in VMT, but in a release step.
  2. To bring the piston into VMT of a step of compression, turn a cranked shaft on one complete revolution (360 °) clockwise. Now the begunok should indicate a label on the distributor or a cover of gear wheels. When the begunok indicates the plug of a wire of a spark plug No. 1 on a distributor cover, and labels of distribution of ignition are combined, the piston No. 1 is in the provision VMT of a step of compression.

If it is impossible to combine ignition labels when the begunok indicates a label, it is possible that the distributive belt or a chain slipped some teeths on an asterisk, or were established incorrectly.

  1. After the piston No. 1 is given in the provision VMT of the end of a step of compression, VMT for other pistons can be reached by a provorachivaniye of a cranked shaft in accordance with the established procedure operation of cylinders. Notice position of plugs of wires of other spark plugs also as you did it for the plug No. 1, then number labels according to numbers of cylinders. At a provorachivaniye of a cranked shaft the begunok will turn also. When it will directly point to one of labels on the distributor, the piston of this cylinder will appear in the provision VMT of a step of compression.
