11.2.5. Rack or shock-absorber replacement / twisted spring Removal
This Section belongs to all assemblies of a rack of a forward suspension bracket, and, to assemblies of a spring and the shock-absorber of a back suspension bracket. |
If on racks, shock-absorbers or twisted springs obvious signs of wear (such as leakage of liquid, loss of the amortiziruyushchy ability, the damaged, stretched or burst twisted springs), check all parameters before the beginning of any work are noticed. Racks or shock-absorber assemblies with a spring are available in workshops for an exchange that considerably saves work and time. Before car dismantling always check cost and existence on sale of details necessary for you.
Dismantle of a rack of a suspension bracket or shock-absorber assembly with a spring is potentially dangerous business, it is necessary for it to pay special attention, differently it can lead to serious mutilations. Use only the high-quality tool for compression of springs and attentively follow the instructions of the producer attached to the tool. After removal of a twisted spring from assembly of a rack place it in a separate safe place. |
- Remove a rack of a suspension bracket or shock-absorber assembly (see. Section Removal and installation of assembly of a rack of a forward suspension bracket). Establish assembly in a vice. Protect sponges of a vice wooden whetstones or rags not to damage assembly, and do not tighten a vice too strongly.
- Following instructions of the producer, establish the tool for compression of springs (it can be got in the majority of shops of auto parts or to borrow) on a spring and compress it so to remove all stress from a suspension bracket support. To check it it is possible, having shaken a spring.
- Remove a protective cap from a being self-stopped nut of the shock-absorber. Release a nut by means of a wrench, at the same time holding the shock-absorber in an immovability other key.
- Give a nut, remove the rack bearing, an insulator and a big washer. Check, whether the bearing easily works. If it jams, replace it. Check a rubber insulator on wear and existence of cracks, and if necessary replace it.
- Remove the holder of a spring and a rubber ring in the top part of a spring. Check a ring on existence of cracks and hardening. If necessary replace it.
- Carefully remove the compressed spring from assembly of a rack and place it in a reliable place, for example, in a steel locker.
Never incline the head close by the spring end! |
- Remove a protective tube and the rubber buffer from the shock-absorber. If they are worn-out or damaged, replace them.
- At work from a resistant forward suspension bracket release and remove a carving cuff, then pull out old assembly of a rack from the rack case. Pour out old oil of the case.
- On all racks, except gas-filled, fill the rack case from 42 to 47 cm3 (on models 518i and 520i) or from 20 to 25 cm3 (on other models) engine oil (oil helps to cool the shock-absorber, transferring heat on the rack case).
Has no the value, what engine oil to use. |
- Installation make upside-down. Tighten a carving cuff with demanded effort. Make sure that the end of a twisted spring is flush with a flange of a rubber ring and with the holder of a spring. Tighten a shock-absorber nut with demanded effort.
- Establish a rack of a suspension bracket or shock-absorber assembly (see. Section Removal and installation of assembly of a rack of a forward suspension bracket).
