3.5. Work check, removal and installation of the fan of cooling of the engine and coupling of its drive

In order to avoid possible damages DO NOT MAINTAIN the car with the idle fan of cooling of the engine. Do not try to repair the damaged blades of the fan - replace the fan. Besides, the auxiliary electric fan established before a radiator or the condenser of air conditioning can be included without start of the engine or ignition inclusion. Its work is regulated by cooler temperature by means of the temperature sensors switches located on a radiator.


Auxiliary electric fan

This fan on the majority of models copes two temperature sensors switches located in a radiator: one for work at low temperatures with low speed of rotation, another - at high temperatures with high speed of rotation. Everyone their switches works at a certain temperature of a cooler (see. A size table and adjusting data at the end of the Management).

Switches of high and low speed of work of the auxiliary fan operated by the thermostat are located in radiator tanks, in different places depending on type of the engine and car model (see an illustration). It can be established either one double, or two unary switches.


  1. Insert a small screw-driver into the socket to wring out blocking uvula, and disconnect fan conducting.
  2. For check of the motor of the fan disconnect the electric socket of the motor by means of a wire from a set for car start from an external source connect the fan directly to the battery. If thus the fan does not work, means, the motor is faulty and should be replaced. If the fan works, it is possible that the switch is faulty. For more exact diagnostics make the check corresponding to model of your car.

Turn the motor of the auxiliary fan a hand to check, whether jammed it. Before it, however, make sure that the engine cooled down sufficiently and there is no danger of spontaneous turning on of the fan during check.

  1. For check low - and high-speed contours disconnect the electric socket of one of switches and connect socket plugs a short piece of a wire. The fan should work with low or high speed, depending on what switch was disconnected. On some models before start of the fan it is necessary to include ignition.
  2. Repeat check on other switch.
  3. If it is low - and high-speed contours are serviceable, but the fan nevertheless works badly, replace the switch (or switches). To remove the switch, merge a cooler to level below switch level (see. Head Routine maintenance of the car), then give screws, remove the old switch and establish the new. Add a cooler in system.
  4. If switches are serviceable, but the motor nevertheless does not work, a problem most likely in a faulty safety lock, the relay or the conducting connecting components (or the motor of the fan). The mechanical fan with the viscosity coupling


  1. Disconnect a negative wire of the battery and shake the fan a hand here and there to check size люфта the bearing.

If the radio receiver of your car is equipped with system of protection against theft, make sure that you gathered the correct code before a battery detachment.

If after connection of the battery of an inscription on an instrument guard appeared not in that language, address to the Section System of protection of an audiosystem from theft and language of an instrument guard where procedure of installation of the necessary language is described.

  1. Let's to the engine cool down and turn fan blades a hand. They should turn with small resistance.
  2. Examine assembly of the coupling of the fan on existence of signs of serious leakage of liquid. If such leak is available, replace coupling assembly.
  3. Warm up the engine to working temperature, switch off ignition and disconnect a negative wire of the battery. Turn the fan a hand. This time resistance should be stronger. If blades are turned easily, it is necessary to replace the fan coupling.

Removal and installation

Auxiliary electric fan


  1. Disconnect a negative wire of the battery.
  2. To remove the auxiliary fan, follow the procedure corresponding to model of your car.
  3. Give screws and remove the covering panel before a radiator.
  4. To Otboltita fan assembly from points of fastening of the condenser.
  5. Disconnect the electric socket of the fan.
  6. Remove the fan and a casing from the car, trying not to damage at removal of the fan the condenser of central air of air where it is available.
  7. Installation make upside-down.

The mechanical fan with the viscosity coupling


  1. Disconnect a negative wire of the battery. Give screws or remove plastic fastenings of a casing of the fan and disconnect a casing (see. Section Removal and radiator installation).
  1. The cooling fan on the water pump fastens to a shaft by means of a nut with the left foreign carving located directly behind the fan.
  1. By means of a 32-millimetric key remove fan/coupling assembly. Place a key on a big nut before a pulley and knock on the key end - And a metal drift - In to weaken a nut.

This nut has a left foreign carving therefore to give it it is possible turn clockwise if to look at the car in front.

  1. Take fan/coupling assembly (and a casing if it is necessary) from an impellent compartment.
  1. If it is necessary, give four bolts of fastening of a pulley to a nave of the water pump. The pulley then can be removed, having removed driving belts.
  1. Attentively examine fan blades on existence of defects and damages. Replace them if it is necessary.
  2. Now the fan it is possible отболтить from the coupling if it is necessary. If you are going to put the fan coupling on the shelf, put it so that the party directed to a radiator, looked down.
