5.4. Check of functioning and moment adjustment ignitions (TCI system)

At adjustment of the moment of ignition hold hands, the equipment and wires at sufficient distance from a krylchatka of the fan.


In this section procedure of check and adjustment of the moment of ignition on the engines equipped with TCI is described. On engines the moment of ignition decides on Motronic control system in the electronic control unit and adjustment is not subject. By means of the following procedure it is possible to check the ignition moment, but any numerical values are received cannot, therefore if there are reasons about the wrong moment of ignition, address to the dealer of BMW.

Some special tools are necessary for this procedure. The engine should have normal working temperature and the air conditioner (if it is established) should be switched off. Be convinced that idling turns the correct.

Tools for check and adjustment of the moment of ignition

1 — Vacuum caps - In most cases vacuum hoses should be disconnected and muffled. For this purpose at desire it is possible to use caps of the different sizes and forms
2 — the Stroboscopic lamp with the induction sensor - Flashes the bright directed ray of light at spark plug No. 1 operation. Connect wires according to the enclosed instruction
3 — the Key - On some models the bolt of fastening is remote for the ignition distributor usual keys or face heads. It is necessary to apply a similar key


 PERFORMANCE ORDER

  1. Cock the parking brake and for prevention of movement of the car block wheels. Transmission should be in neutral situation (manual) or in the situation Parking (automatic).
  2. Labels of the moment of ignition are located on an engine flywheel (they can be seen through an opening of check of the moment of ignition in a coupling case) and/or on a damper of krutilny fluctuations on an engine front.
  3. If the vacuum regulator of an advancing of ignition is applied, disconnect from it a vacuum hose.
  4. Connect in compliance with the instruction of manufacturers a tachometer and a stroboscopic lamp (the lamp with the induction sensor is preferable). Usually wires of a food of a stroboscopic lamp are connected to plugs of the storage battery, and the wire of the sensor is connected to a high-voltage wire of a spark plug No. 1. A spark plug No. 1 near to an engine front.

If the stroboscopic lamp with the induction sensor is inaccessible, for connection of a wire of management of a stroboscopic lamp do not puncture a high-voltage wire of a spark plug. If isolation of a high-voltage wire is damaged, tension of a secondary chain in a point of damage will become isolated on the case and the engine will glitch.


On some models for check of system of ignition the VMT transmitter is established. However, for its use it is necessary to connect a special tester of BMW therefore if the special tester is inaccessible to the diagnostic socket, it is necessary to use a usual stroboscopic lamp. Labels of the moment of ignition can be located on a damper of krutilny fluctuations and if they are not present, there should be VMT label. If the stroboscopic lamp has an adjustable delay, the moment of ignition can be defined by preliminary zeroing of measurement, and then rotation of the adjusting device before combination of labels of VMT then the size of an advancing of the moment of ignition is read out from a stroboscopic lamp. If the standard stroboscopic lamp is used, according to a demanded advancing of the moment of ignition put on a damper of krutilny fluctuations a label and for distance calculation from VMT label to a label of the moment of ignition use a formula:

  1. At the switched-off ignition weaken a nut of a bracket of the distributor of ignition so that the distributor turned without a proskalzyvaniye.
  2. Be convinced that wires of a stroboscopic lamp pass far from driving belts and the fan, then start the engine.
  3. Increase engine turns to demanded value and then direct a flashing stroboscopic lamp on ignition labels - be very careful with moving parts of the engine.
  4. The label on a flywheel or a damper of krutilny fluctuations should seem motionless. If it appears combined with a demanded label on a case of coupling or a forward cover of the engine, the ignition moment correct.

  1. If labels are not combined, adjustment is required. Very slowly rotate the ignition distributor while labels will not be combined, taking measures not to touch high-voltage wires.
  2. Tighten a nut of a bracket of the distributor and check the ignition moment once again.
  3. Muffle the engine and disconnect a stroboscopic lamp and a tachometer. Attach a vacuum hose if is available.
